Imran Khan to be moved to new Islamabad jail, minister says, amid court-ordered medical deadline

Imran Khan jail transfer to new Islamabad prison

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said former prime minister Imran Khan will be transferred to a new jail in Islamabad once the facility is completed within the next two months, adding that the prison will include medical facilities.

Naqvi said Khan would be moved to a prison in the capital because his conviction was handed down by a court in Islamabad.

The interior minister’s comments came as authorities face fresh scrutiny over Khan’s health and detention conditions at Adiala Jail, where he has been held in connection with multiple legal cases since 2023.

In recent days, political debate has intensified following claims by Khan’s legal team and party figures that he has faced delayed medical attention and prolonged isolation.

Lawyer report cites major vision loss, calls for specialist care

A report submitted by Salman Safdar, described in court proceedings as an amicus curiae, said Khan has lost about 85% of vision in his right eye and raised concerns about access to medical treatment, according to details reported from the filing.

Khan’s sister, Aleema, has also filed a contempt petition against the Adiala jail superintendent, while PTI officials have alleged negligence by prison authorities, which the government has disputed.

Supreme Court sets February 16 deadline and allows family contact

Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the formation of a medical board to examine Khan and set a February 16 deadline for the assessment, while also directing that he be allowed to speak with his children before that date, court reporting said.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said Khan would be permitted to undergo an eye examination by a doctor of his choice and rejected allegations that complaints were ignored for months.

Officials have said the medical examination and related arrangements are underway as the court’s deadline approaches, while the government continues to face pressure to clarify what treatment Khan has received in custody.
