India’s defence ministry on Thursday signed a Rs 2,312 crore contract with state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to procure eight Dornier 228 aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard.
The procurement programme was finalised in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, according to an official readout.
What the contract covers
The Ministry of Defence said the deal includes eight Dornier 228 aircraft along with operational role equipment for the Indian Coast Guard.
The contract has been signed under the “Buy (Indian)” category. This is a procurement route that prioritises domestically manufactured defence equipment.
Why the government is highlighting jobs and MSMEs
The ministry said the programme is expected to create significant direct and indirect employment.
It also said the order will strengthen HAL’s production ecosystem. In addition, it is expected to support a wider network of MSMEs and ancillary industries linked to the supply chain.
MSMEs are micro, small and medium enterprises, often involved in components, sub-systems, and support services.
How it fits into Aatmanirbhar Bharat and maritime security
The defence ministry said the contract reinforces the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
It also said the procurement will bolster India’s maritime security architecture. For the Coast Guard, additional aircraft can expand surveillance and operational reach along the coastline and surrounding waters.
The ministry said the final aim is to strengthen capability while keeping the programme aligned with domestic manufacturing priorities.
